ABSTRACT
Introduction
This forum deals with a subject long obscured in rhetoric. It will attempt to clarify the nature, objectives, and achievements of the International Dairy Federation (IDF) and to portray the image conveyed to important USA dairy organizations when association is introduced to the discussion. Also it will portray to some degree the present thinking of highly respected persons as to the practicality of association or affiliation.
During the past two decades many individuals from the American Dairy Science Association, different sectors of the United States dairy industry, and the government have been involved in exploring, with IDF representatives, the possibilities for affiliation. In the early 1960's a meeting was arranged in New York city wherein major USA dairy industry and producer groups met with A. M. Guerault, then president of the IDF, and Jean Mittaine, Chairman of the IDF Economic Commission, to discuss the merits of affiliation. In 1970 our US delegation to the 18th Dairy Congress in Australia met with representatives of IDF for further discussion, and, more recently, in 1976 American representatives convened for the same purpose at the IDF Annual Meeting in Quebec, Canada.
