Influence of Future Energy Supplies on Processing Procedures and Costs

A. L. Rippen

Food Science and Human Nutrition Department, Michigan State University, East Lansing 48824

ABSTRACT

The availability, cost, and regulations controlling energy supplies undoubtedly will influence dairy processing operations to a significant degree during the 1980's. Imports of foreign oil have increased greatly in recent years (3) reaching nearly 50% of the oil consumed in the United States. A contraction of available domestic natural gas and oil supplies coupled with oil price increases by the exporting countries has raised significantly prices paid for energy. The immediate future promises little or no relief in the cost of all forms of energy.
