Memorial Thomas Andrew Nickerson (1921–1978)

W. L. Dunkley

ABSTRACT

As a tribute to an eminent dairy researcher, a highly respected teacher, a leader in his academic institution, and a friend beloved by many, a memorial scholarship has been established at the University of California, Davis, to honor Thomas A. Nickerson. Tom died unexpectedly following a heart attack at his home on May 29. He was 56.

Nickerson, who had won international recognition for his research on lactose, began his career at UCD in 1950 in the Department of Dairy Industry. He was promoted though the ranks to Professor of Food Science and Technology. He was Associate Dean of the College of Agricultural and Environmental Sciences from 1964 to 1969 and Acting Associate Dean in 1976. Active in the University's academic senate, he was chairman of the faculty of the college at the time of his death.

In 1969–70, Nickerson was a visiting scholar at the New Zealand Dairy Research Institute.
