Practical Experiences with Payment for Milk for Protein and Fat

Carl E. Zurborg

Mississippi Valley Milk Producers Association, Davenport, IA 52802

ABSTRACT

Our cooperative is not one of the giant organizations as we only have about 3,000 members. Our members own a milk bottling plant, sell Grade A milk to proprietary dealers, own and operate two large cheese factories and one small one, and operate a butter-powder manufacturing plant. Our goal is to market our members' milk, long-term at the highest possible price, and to distribute equitably the returns to the membership.

This morning we would like to cover six points on the subject as follows.

How We Got Into It

In the early 1970's, our members began asking when we were going to get into protein or solids testing. This came to our attention at district meetings where members turn out in sizable numbers for grass roots discussions. In 1973 we attended the American Dairy Science Association meeting at Pullman, WA. At that meeting, a symposium covered protein and solids pricing of milk and we recall that Gary Richardson and Alan Luke had important papers at that meeting.
