ABSTRACT
While several people have commented on the paucity of dairy products research for many years, there does not seem to have been any attempt to document the resources available for this research from all sources. Establishment of the Current Research Information System (CRIS) provides a means for determining the nature and amount of research that is being done by state universities and land grant colleges and the United States Department of Agriculture (USDA). While the system is fraught with problems, it is beginning to provide valuable information for planning. University and USDA-Agricultural Research Service (ARS) research is described in the system reasonably satisfactorily. Marketing was used previously to describe all activities from the farm gate to the consumer, but marketing is now being divided into marketing "technology" and marketing "economics." Marketing technology includes dairy products research. Marketing economics research is not included in estimates in this paper.
Generally, it has been assumed that the dairy industry would not divulge the extent of its research commitments; therefore, efforts to obtain information on their investments in dairy products research have been few.
