On July 2, 1862, President Lincoln signed into law a measure (Morrill Act) providing that federal lands be used to endow, in each state, at least one college which, in addition to traditional classical studies, would emphasize studies related to agricultural and industrial development. On the following September 11, Iowa became the first state to accept terms of the Morrill Land Grant Act. On March 29, 1864 the Iowa General Assembly voted to award Iowa's grant to the agricultural college in Ames which evolved into what is known as Iowa State University.
The University is composed of six undergraduate colleges plus the graduate college. Enrollment during fall quarter 1976 was 21,831 with 3,409 undergraduate students and 698 graduate students in the College of Agriculture.
