ABSTRACT

The apparatus monitors ingestive behavior of individual, free-feeding dairy cattle confined to a tie-stall. The system consists of an electronic weighing platform connected to a chart recorder which continuously records the disappearance of feed from the cow's feed tray. This permits quantitation of spontaneous meal numbers, meal durations, within-meal rates, and inter-meal intervals. Construction of the weighing platform is described.
