Teaching Dairy Science to a Heterogeneous Group of Students at Michigan State University

J. H. Britt, P. A. Noden and R. S. Emery

Department of Dairy Science, Michigan State University, East Lansing 48824

ABSTRACT

INTRODUCTION

During the past 5 yr, number of students enrolled as majors in dairy science at Michigan State University has doubled (Fig. 1). In addition to increased numbers, there has been an increase in diversity among students choosing dairy science as their major. In 1971, approximately 70% of the majors had backgrounds in dairy farming compared with 55% of today's students. Currently 34% of our majors are female compared to less than 5% in 1971. During the last 2 to 3 yr there has been an increase in number of students pursuing a second Bachelor of Science degree, and as a result 8 to 10% of our current students have completed one baccalaureate degree. Thus, our majors are now more heterogeneous in background and educational level.

Not only has there been an increase in number of majors in dairy science, but number of students enrolling in our courses has increased as reflected in student credit hours produced by the department (Fig. 1).
