How Can Universities Do a Better Job Communicating with the Dairy Industry?

Eugene C. Meyer

Hoard's Dairyman, Fort Atkinson, WI

ABSTRACT

I am sure everyone here realizes the importance of universities communicating and responding to the needs of the dairy industry so I have revised the title of this paper. Hopefully, I can suggest ways this communicating can be more effective than it is being done now.

To confirm some of my thoughts, and to make sure I'm not completely off track, I consulted a few of my friends who are involved directly with the dairy industry (including some dairy farmers). Despite their widely divergent vocations and geographical locations, their response was amazingly similar. So I feel quite confident that what I suggest is reasonably representative of what others believe.

At the outset I want to emphasize that during my lifetime the credibility of the university and its personnel has improved tremendously. I well remember as a youngster on the farm that the ideas and practices espoused by those college professors often were greeted with a great deal of skepticism.
