Dr. Beatrice S. Mintz, a senior member of Philadelphia's Institute for Cancer Research, Fox Chase Cancer Center, received the prestigious Ernst W. Bertner Memorial Award from the M. D. Anderson Hospital and Tumor Institute in Houston, TX. The presentation took place in Houston during the opening session of the 30th Annual Symposium on Fundamental Cancer Research.
Mintz is the second woman to receive the Bertner Award. (Dr. Elizabeth C. Miller and Dr. James A. Miller of McArdle Laboratory in Madison, WI, shared it in 1971.) Established in 1950, it is given annually to a scientist or physician who has made distinguished contributions to cancer research. The award honors the late E. W. Bertner, M.D., first acting director of the M. D. Anderson Hospital.
Mintz's award lecture was entitled "In Vivo Analyses of Neoplasis and Differentiation in Genetic Mosaics." She is famous for her work with allophenic or "mosaic" mice, which combine the genetic traits of two dissimilar mouse strains in a single litter.
