ABSTRACT

A computing procedure for intraherd best linear unbiased predictions of additive genetic and permanent environmental values for cows has been developed and tested. The average herd had 170 genetic equations and required about 20 s of computing time on an IBM 370 Model 135 with 260K of available storage. This time could be reduced in later runs where previous solutions can speed convergence to updated solutions. This appears to be a rapid procedure for evaluations of cows within herds.
