ABSTRACT
Birth records on 927 Maine-Anjou Ayrshire and 2372 Maine-Anjou Holstein crossbred calves born in Quebec in 1974 were analyzed for estimates of parameters of birth. The length of the gestation of the two hybrids was identical to the mid-parent average. The average birth weights of the hybrid calves were close to weights expected from birth weights for the respective purebred calves. Gestation length and birth weight were correlated positively. Calvings were difficult in about 10% of the birth events of hybrid calves. Neonatal mortality was not evaluated because data for stillborn calves were not reported with sufficient consistency by the dairy farmers. The ratio of twin births was low, 3/1000 in Maine-Anjou Ayrshires and 4/1000 in Maine-Anjou Holsteins.
