ABSTRACT

Forty-eight cows were in a double switchback trial in which 4% coarse barley straw was substituted for an equal weight of alfalfa cubes in rations of both low and high roughage. The low roughage control contained 55.4% concentrate, 39.6% alfalfa cubes, and 5.0% molasses while the high roughage control contained 35.8% concentrate, 59.2% alfalfa cubes, and 5.0% molasses. For the four resulting rations, low roughage-control, low roughage-straw, high roughage-control, and high roughage-straw, differences were: higher percent fat by both high roughage diets; low digestibility of combustible energy, protein, and fat by the high roughage-control diet; lower digestibility of fiber by both control diets as compared to their added straw counterparts; and lower digestibility of fiber by both low roughage diets as compared to their high roughage counterparts.
