James R. Nichols has been named Dean of the College of Agriculture and Life Sciences of Virginia Polytechnic Institute and State University. The appointment was effective December 1, 1975.
Nichols, 49, a native of Jackson, TN, joined the Virginia Tech faculty in 1964 as head of the Department of Dairy Science. Except for a 20-month leave of absence, 1971 to 1973, to serve as executive vice president and general manager of Select Sires, Inc., of Columbus, OH, Nichols has been active in Virginia animal agriculture since 1964. He has been Associate Dean and Director of the College's Division of Animal and Veterinary Sciences since his return from Columbus in 1973. Prior to his leave of absence with Select Sires, Inc., he had served as Associate Dean for Academic Affairs in the college since 1969.
Nichols came to Virginia Tech from Pennsylvania State University in 1964, where he held a joint teaching-research appointment as associate professor of dairy science.
