Forage Testing and Feeding Programs

ABSTRACT

A majority of the state and provincial extension services in the United States and Canada offer or promote a forage testing service to their farmers. There is a large range in chemical tests offered and in the way the results of the tests are used. Advances in analytical methods and computer formulation of diets from results of the tests combine to offer the potential of greatly increased nutrient and economic efficiency in feeding cattle. Those farmers who have complete feed systems with quantitative blending for two or more production groups are more able to take advantage of the increased precision of diet formulation which forage testing offers.
