R. E. Leighton, Professor of Dairy Science and Chairman of the Dairy Section, Department of Animal Science at Texas A&M University, died May 6, 1975 at the age of 64.
Leighton was a native of Welch, Oklahoma. He received his B.S. degree in 1932 from Oklahoma State University. After teaching school for three years in rural Oklahoma, he returned to Oklahoma State as an Experiment Station Superintendant. During this time, he earned the M.S. degree from Oklahoma State. He earned the Ph.D. degree in 1956 from Texas A&M University.
He began his university career in 1947 at Texas A&M University, where he served as a teacher, researcher, and friend to students and co-workers until his death. It is estimated that he taught over 4000 students during his 28 years at Texas A&M.
He received many honors and awards for excellence in teaching, including the Faculty Distinguished Achievement Award in 1959, the Collegiate FFA, "Outstanding Professor in Agriculture" award in 1958, the Civilian Student Council Award for Student-Faculty Relations in 1972, and the Student Agricultural Council Award for "Outstanding Professor of Agriculture" in 1975.
