ABSTRACT

A computerized system with programs in Fortran IV was developed to organize and report routinely in chronological order detailed records of individuals in a dairy herd for teaching and research. The goal was to facilitate access to recorded information and to increase its usefulness for routine herd management, teaching, and the specialized requirements of research projects. Capacity of the system can be increased or reduced without altering system format or computer programs. Data input was simplified by preprinted forms and preprinted codes. Specific notations such as symptoms of ailment and medication can be included. The system is useful for decisions of herd management and is especially efficient for retrieving data on animals in class demonstrations and controlled research trials.
