ABSTRACT

R. W. Hemken is the recipient of the 1974 American Feed Manufacturers Award. He has focused his research on a wide range of practical nutritional problems facing dairy farmers. His studies have been characterized by sound experimental design and good statistical treatment leading to valid interpretation of data.

A native of Illinois, he was born in 1928 and attended the University of Illinois where he was awarded the B.S. degree in 1950 and the M.S. in 1954. Between his B.S. and M.S. he served one year as a county agricultural agent in Illinois and two years in the U.S. Army. He resumed his studies at Cornell University and received the Ph.D. degree in 1957. He then joined the faculty at the University of Maryland where most of his research has been conducted.

During the past 3 years Hemken authored or coauthored 25 scientific publications or papers presented at professional meetings.

He and his colleagues demonstrated that lactating cows produce well for several lactations when corn silage is the only forage in the ration.
