ABSTRACT
The function of an extension dairyman specializing in dairy cattle breeding is to monitor genetic progress, monitor new products and services, evaluate cows and sires, and educate and consult with lay leaders concerning genetic improvement of dairy cattle. This role has remained constant while methods of accomplishing the goals have changed dramatically. In the early days before Artificial Insemination (AI), the extension specialist was frequently involved in evaluation of a herd sire by Equal Parent Index or Daughter-Dam Comparison as a method of estimating the sire's genetic merit.
Introduction of AI made the responsibilities of the extension dairyman more challenging. Prospects of a new service with a superior genetic product stimulated extension educational programs on the merits and techniques of AI. Initially, many AI organizations were conceived and run by extension personnel until they were sufficiently mature to stand on their own. Extension specialists combed the state to find superior non-AI proven sires for use in AI.
