Joseph C. Derbyshire (1927–1974)

ABSTRACT

Joe Derbyshire died on March 18, 1974, following a courageous battle with diabetes. He was born in Baltimore on June 20, 1927. After serving in the U. S. Marine Corp. from August 14, 1945, to August 29, 1946, he enrolled in the University of Maryland and received a B. S. degree in agricultural economics in 1950. For the next six years he was a working herdsman and fann manager on an 80 cow, 550 acre Maryland dairy farm. On July 22, 1957, he joined the Dairy Cattle Research Branch. While working the next few years at Beltsville he completed the course requirements for a M.S. degree at the University of Maryland.

During his 17 years at Beltsville Joe was extremely devoted to the dairy industry. He worked primarily on forage preservation and silage evaluation with emphasis on animal production per acre as well as per day.His studies on hay-crop silage involved crop species, wilting, covering techniques, mechanical dewatering, structure comparisons, fertilization, harvesting date, field losses, and silage additives. With corn silage he has studied maturity and corn silage as a basis for complete dairy rations.
