ABSTRACT
Seminal plasma from 20 bulls, ejaculated once weekly by artificial vagina after 30 wk of age, was frozen. The first sample (2 to 13 wk before puberty) and samples representing 5 and 1 wk prior to puberty, puberty (first with 50 x 106 sperm/ejaculate,
10% motile sperm, at 41 ± 4 wk of age), and at 5, 10, 20, and 30 wk after puberty were analyzed. Regressions with age of seminal plasma protein concentration, chloride ion concentration, and total fructose per ejaculate were not significant. However, total protein, total chloride, total glycerylphosphorylcholine, and glycerylphosphorylcholine concentration increased while fructose concentration decreased with advancing bull age. As a result of increased sperm output, the amount of each constituent per 109 sperm decreased after puberty. The number of different antigens detectable in seminal plasma with anti-rete testis fluid or anti-cauda epididymal plasma increased after puberty, but the number of blood antigens in seminal plasma decreased. Both composition of seminal plasma and relative volume contributed by the different reproductive organs changed during the first 30 wk after puberty.
