Professor Arthur R. Porter retired from the Iowa State University staff May 31, 1973, after a long association with the University and the state of Iowa. Professor Porterwas born on a farm near Weaverton, New York, and obtained his high school education at North Creek High School. In response to an advertisement in Hoard's Dairyman, he took a job as DHIA supervisor in Black Hawk country Iowa in 1926. In 1928 he enrolled at Iowa State University in dairy husbandry, graduating in 1931. From 1931–35 he was manager for Iowana Farms in Davenport. He returned to Iowa State as an extension dairyman in 1935 and retained this position until 1947, with time out to obtain his M.S. from the University of Minnesota in 1939. From 1947–51 he was Associate Professor of Dairy Science and was involved in both teaching and research. In 1951 he became Professor in Charge of Dairy Science and retained that position until 1968.
