Dr. H. B. Ellenberger, retired professor and head of the animal and dairy husbandry department at the University of Vermont from 1917 to 1948, died January 12, 1970, at Orlando, Florida. He was born in Dallas, Iowa, where his father was a minister.
Dr. Ellenberger had a long, varied, and professionally productive career. He received the B.S. degree from Iowa State College in 1905, the M.S. and Ph.D. degrees from Cornell University in 1915 and 1917.
During his undergraduate summers he worked on dairy farms in Illinois and Minnesota. He was assistant superintendent Sinnissippi Farms in Illinois in 1905 and was in charge of other farms in Iowa and Missouri from 1907 to 1913.
Dr. Ellenberger began his academic career as instructor in the dairy industry department at Cornell University in September, 1914. Along with teaching and research duties, he completed all requirements for the Ph.D. degree in 1917. That year he was appointed associate professor of animal and dairy husbandry at the University of Vermont and was promoted to professor and head of the department in 1918.
