ABSTRACT
Conformational and managemental traits are important but they are far less important than the yield traits, and their secondary priority should be maintained. Selection for managemental traits will probably not produce great amounts of direct economic benefit for the dairyman but could influence the kind of cows which are mated to a bull and may increase calf livability for more available replacements and more production of beef.
Effects of herd fertility, herd replacements (calf birth and calf livability), and yield management traits (temperament and milking speed) are important to herd profitability although low heritabilities limit selection. Increased herd profits are attainable through smaller calf birth weights resulting in greater calf livability.
