Dairy Breeding Research Center, Department of Dairy Science, The Pennsylvania State University, University Park 16802

ABSTRACT

In a split-ejaculate experiment involving 25 ejaculates from 10 Holstein-Friesian bulls, fertility of semen packaged and frozen in glass ampules did not differ significantly among antibiotic combinations. Mean 66-day nonreturn rates were 68.8, 67.6, and 66.6% for 2,662, 2,674, and 2,679 first service cows for milk diluted semen treated with 1,000 units penicillin and 1,000 µg neomycin, 150 µg lincomycin and 300 µg spectinomycin, or 1,000 units penicillin and 1,000 µg streptomycin/ml. Combinations of penicillin and neomycin or lincomycin and spectinomycin are satisfactory substitutes for penicillin and streptomycin in diluted bull semen without impairing fertility.
