Department of Animal Science, Iowa State University, Ames
ABSTRACT
Washington State University, represented by the Department of Animal Sciences and the Department of Food Science and Technology, hosted the 68th annual meeting of the American Dairy Science Association.
The first Washington state legislature established the state's land grant college, now Washington State University, March 28, 1890.
Located in still sparsely populated eastern Washington, the University has extended its influence not only throughout Washington and the Pacific Northwest but nationally and internationally.
Those who wrote its state charter made it a multipurpose institution from the beginning, and the man who probably did more to shape its future course than any other came to the institution in 1893 as its third president. Dr. E. A. Bryan, president for 23 years, successfully fought to preserve his people's university against political efforts to strip it of its educational breadth.
The alumni who have received its coveted Distinguished Alumnus Award from the Board of Regents illustrate the diversity of educational opportunity offered.
