Minimum Number of Fresh Milk Samples: A Test of the Theory

N. H. Pelsue, Jr.

University of Maine, Orono 04473

ABSTRACT

This study utilizes empirical data to evaluate the applicability of statistical theory upon which recent sampling regulations for fresh milk have been based. A computer program was designed to observe all permissible combinations of various numbers of samples per month. The calculated butterfat test for each combination was compared with its respective true butterfat test, and the magnitude and sign of the difference was recorded. If 90% confidence and ± .10 tolerance are acceptable, the recommended three stratified random samples per month provide a good estimate of the true butterfat content of producer milk.
