ABSTRACT
Forty-eight Holstein heifers, averaging 157 kg were divided randomly into four groups and fed rations containing (I) ground raw soybeans, (II) expanded-extruded soybeans, (III) roasted soybeans, and (IV) soybean meal ad libitum for 112 days. Heifers on I and III ate more feed than those on II and IV. Apparent digestibility of dry matter, protein, and energy were determined by a 7-day trial of total fecal collection involving 12 Holstein steers of approximately the same size and age as the heifers. The ration containing raw soybeans was lower in apparent digestible dry matter, protein, and energy than were those containing either cooked soybeans or soybean meal. Animals on IV had a more desirable feed to gain ratio than the others, but there were no differences among the heifers in rate of gain. It appears that the trypsin inhibitor in raw soybeans was not destroyed completely in the rumen of young cattle.
