ABSTRACT
Serum immunoreactive insulin was measured at intervals during lactation in cows consuming restricted roughage or control rations. At 16 weeks postpartum when milk fat depression was greatest, serum immunoreactive insulin was higher in the restricted roughage group. In general there was a negative relationship between serum immunoreactive insulin and milk fat production and percentage. Within treatment, however, such relationships were consistently negative on restricted roughage ration but either nil or positive on control ration. Rumen acetate:propionate ratios were negatively correlated with serum immunoreactive insulin.
