ABSTRACT
Is Animal Waste a Problem?
The first step in solving a problem or answering a question is to define the problem clearly and concisely. Everyone is aware of the recent concern for protecting and improving the environment. Ecology, pollution, conservation, environmental protection, and entrophication have suddenly become common household words. Their meaning frequently depends on the interest or concern of the individual. However, actions by local, state, national, and international agencies make it obvious that there is concern and, thus, a problem in protecting and improving the environment. The general mass hysteria is being replaced with sound and factual concern. Manure management is a specsc problem that needs special attention.
Agriculture is only one of many industries and groups that has been indicted for causing environmental problems. Likewise, agriculture is only one industry that is facing the challenge and problem of decreasing the general pollution problem. In fact, agriculture rightfully has been patted on the back for signscant contributions to environmental protection and improvement.
