ABSTRACT
Two hundred and fifteen research papers, 42 technical notes, 15 industry papers, and 11 symposium papers, totaling 283 papers were published in Volume 55 as compared to 337 published in 1971. The difference of 54 is believed not to be significant because of the slow response of authors in submitting their symposium papers for publication, and also because of editor's vacations, fewer papers were approved for publication during August (Table 1).
Research papers and technical notes published were essentially the same for 1971 and 1972.
Authors' manuscripts have improved in quality of writing and content over the years. Manuscripts approved by editorial committees or by editors before being submitted for publication, are among the best prepared. However, some substandard manuscripts are received and must be returned for rewriting. The editors cite examples in the papers whereby organization, terminology, syntax, etc., can be improved. Editors do not and should not rewrite papers because authors will be less likely to recognize the need to improve their own writing. Furthermore, an editor's rewriting will eventually reveal a stereotyped prose-style of ghost-writing.
