ABSTRACT

Dr. Samuel Todd (Sam) Coulter retired as head of the department of food science and industries at the University of Minnesota on June 30, 1972 after a distinguished career of 47 years at that institution.

Sam Coulter was born at Weiser, Idaho on September 15, 1903, the son of Robert and Annie (Jeffries) Coulter. He attended Oregon State College from which he received the B.S. degree in dairy husbandry in 1925. In the same year he entered the University of Minnesota as a graduate student in what was then known as the division of dairy husbandry of the department of agriculture. His adviser was Dr. C. H. Eckles, prominent dairy leader and chief of the division. Sam's graduate career included a two year stint (1928–30) as manager of the Minnesota State Experimental Creamery at Albert Lea. The year 1928 is also memorable for Sam's marriage to Margaret Robinson of Lamberton, Minnesota.
