Memorial (Tom) Sylvester Warren Mead 1894–1971

ABSTRACT

Professor (Tom) Sylvester Warren Mead retired from the Department of Animal Science at the University of California, Davis, in July, 1962, after 38 years of teaching and research in the field of dairy science. He was born in Greenwich, Connecticut, on October 4, 1894. His father was a businessman and a dairyman in the Greenwich area where Tom gained early experience in dairying. He received his Bachelor of Science Degree from the Connecticut Agricultural College at Storrs, in 1917 and subsequently served with the 27th Infantry Division in France during World War I. Professor Mead received his M.S. degree in dairy production at the University of Minnesota in 1920 where he studied under the famous scientists Dr. C. H. Eckles, Dr. L. S. Palmer, and Dr. R. Adams Dutcher. These men, particularly Dr. Eckles, instilled in Tom a knowledge and love of a rigorous and exacting scientific method of inquiry that characterized his lifelong research and teaching career.
