MilkoTester Automatic1

H. F. Mac Rae

Department of Animal Science, Macdonald College of McGill University, Quebec, Canada

ABSTRACT

Introduction

The MilkoTester Automatic (MTA) introduced in 1967 for the determination of fat in milk was a logical development in a line of instruments following the manually operated MilkoTester Model MKII. The development was significant since in large-scale testing of fat in milk such as in Dairy Herd Improvement Association programs, efficiency in time foe analysis and labor involved become critical factors which determine the cost per sample. Moreover, the MTA probably is the most effecient instrumental method available according to time and labor required for the determination of fat in fluid milk. In 1968 the ProMilk Automatic (PMA—a dye-binding method for protein determination) was introduced which could be completely integrated with the MTA which simultaneously analyzed milk for fat and protein with no reduction in time over the single MTA unit for fat. Subsequently, the semiautomatic MilkoTester Model MK III was introduced and intermediate between the manual MK II and the MTA for fat determination in milk.
