Status of Instrumentation for Gross Composition Analysis of Milk: A Review

G. H. Richardson1

Department of Food Science and Industries, Utah State University, Logan 84321

ABSTRACT

The Committee on Instrumentation for Analysis of Gross Composition has been requested to inform members of the Association of recent developments. This review contains contributions on the Infrared Milk Analyzer by D. A. Biggs, the Milko-Tester by W. F. Shipe, and the Milko-Tester Automatic by H. F. MacRae.

The Mark V Darison Solution Analyzer is currently under evaluation by W. C. Winder, Department of Food Science, University of Wisconsin. The Darison measures solids-not-fat and fat by ultrasound velocity changes in milk (7). Comparative data are being assembled.

The acid orange-12 dyebinding method has received Official final action status from the Association of Official Analytical Chemists (AOAC). It has received limited adoption by industry. Several laboratories serving Federal milk marketing orders are evaluating protein content by the dyebinding procedure.

Additional data from interlaboratory comparisons were gathered for AOAC action on the Infrared Milk Analyzer in 1971. Official first action approval was granted. Regulations now allow its use in California.
