Concentrate Mixtures Based on High Moisture Ear Corn versus Multi-Ingredients for Dairy Cows in Early Lactation

ABSTRACT

Nineteen mature Holstein cows were used to compare two concentrate mixtures: a) a simple mixture based on high-moisture ear corn and b) a multi-ingredient mixture. The trial was during the first 20 weeks of lactation. The cows consuming the high-moisture ear corn based concentrate had a lower forage dry matter intake, a greater concentrate total digestible nutrients intake, and a greater loss in body weight. Differences in total digestible nutrient intake and milk production were not statistically significant between groups consuming the two concentrate mixtures. Neither concentrate was consumed in amounts to meet total digestible nutrient requirements during the first 4 weeks of lactation. The simple concentrate mixture based on the high-moisture ear corn was as adequate as a multi-ingredient mixture for supporting milk production in early lactation.
