ABSTRACT
Editors of many journals in the life sciences prefer not to accept material whose substance has already been published, has been accepted, or is being considered for publication elsewhere. Review articles are an exception to this editorial principle. The multiplicity of forms in which biologic, and especially biomedical material may be printed, however, makes a categorical definition of "already published" difficult. In addition, the circumstances of any apparent prior publication must be taken into account, especially since authors do not always have complete control over the publication of their data or concepts. Despite these complexities, the following general guidelines may be useful to editors in deciding whether or not the contents of a manuscript should be classified as "already published".
