ABSTRACT
Cows were milked with a quarter milker, and somatic cells were estimated on 874 quarters by the filter-DNA method. Mean cells were: 314,000 per milliliter for no infection; 900,000 per milliliter for Streptococcus agalactiae; 1,625,000 per milliliter for Streptococcus uberis; 1,498,000 per milliliter for Staphylococcus aureus; 1,432,000 per milliliter for coagulase-negative, mannitol-positive staphylococci; and 356,000 per milliliter for micrococci infections.
Mean somatic cells in quarters in which clinical mastitis had been reported previously were 1,120,000 per milliliter regardless of presence of bacteria at the time of sampling. Mean in quarters in which clinical mastitis had not been observed was 414,000 cells per milliliter regardless of presence of bacteria.
A quadratic regression analysis revealed a loss in milk yield per quarter when somatic cell counts were elevated.
