ABSTRACT

Twenty-four lactating cows were used to compare the palatability of pelleted concentrate mixtures containing mineral buffers as follows: a) 1.5% each of KHCO3 and NaHCO3; b) 1.5% MgO and c) none. Two concentrate mixtures were fed simultaneously in a balanced Latin square sequence with the amount of each offered being 70% of that estimated to be needed in addition to hay to meet total nutrient requirements. The cows consumed significantly more (P<l.01) control mix than either buffered mix, but intake of the two buffered mixtures was similar. Overall feed intake was reduced approximately 11% when the two buffered mixes were offered simultaneously as compared to consumption when the control mix was one of the choices available to the cows.
