Dr. R. T. Milner, head of the department of food science at the University of Illinois, retired September 1, 1971. He had combined 24 years of research and administration with the U.S. Department of Agriculture and 17 years at the University of Illinois.
Dr. Milner was born in Carbondale, Illinois, educated in the public schools there, received the B.S. and M.S. degrees at the University of Illinois, and the Ph.D. degree from the University of California.
From 1936 to 1941 Dr. Milner was on the staff of the U.S. Regional Soybean Products Laboratory at Urbana, first as principal chemist and then as director. Among his accomplishments was the development of analytical methods for selecting high-oil soybeans.
In 1941 he went to Peoria as head of the analytical and physical chemistry division of the Northern Regional Laboratory and in 1949 he was appointed director. During World War II he supervised research which resulted in saving millions of dollars for the U.S. Government in the emergency soybean marketing program.
