The Southern Division of the American Dairy Science Association Honors Clarence William Reaves

ABSTRACT

Mr. Clarence William Reaves was born March 24, 1909 at Concord, Knox County, Tennessee, where he was reared on a general farm. He managed two dairy herds in succession in Tennessee and Virginia for five years. He supervised the Shelby County (Tennessee) Dairy Herd Improvement Association for five years, and managed the dairy cattle department at the Mid-south Fair.

In 1937 he received the B.S. degree from the University of Tennessee, where, during the same year, he was appointed to the dairy extension staff. He served in this capacity for ten years, during which time he helped organize the Tennessee Artificial Breeding Association, and did outstanding work in wartime milk production programs.

In 1943, Professor Reaves was appointed extension dairyman at the University of Florida, a position he still holds. During the first six months on his new job he organized three full-time DHIA programs. There are now 11 associations employing 15 trained supervisors.
