Students Reactions to Teaching Methods2

George H. Meyers

Department of Animal Science, Oregon State University, Corvallis 97331

ABSTRACT

Changes in technology in recent years have been tremendous. Some technological advances have brought cultural changes our society. Land-grant colleges which were developed as centers of agricultural and mechanical training are being transformed and the relaxed atmosphere once characteristic of them is disappearing as more emphasis is being placed on liberal arts. This shifting emphasis makes it necessary to examine education and evaluate effectiveness of current teaching methods.

Actions by militant student groups do not truly portray the attitudes of all students. However, they do dramatize the quest by many students to achieve relevance of their education to our present society. Extremist students have used violence to force their will for instant change. Our permissive society has let discipline and order be replaced by chaos in some cities. Permissiveness by university administrators has allowed just a few militant students to close campuses. The only agreement readily evident by all student groups is a desire for change!
