Potency of Commercial Anti-bovine Sera1

S. Kumar and E. M. Mikolajcik

Department of Dairy Technology, The Ohio State University, Columbus 43210

ABSTRACT

A survey was made of anti-sera having application for immunoelectrophoretic studies of bovine immunoglobulins. Commercial preparations exhibited extreme variability in potency and, in some instances, failed to meet the manufacturers' specifications. High potency of a specific anti-serum from one supplier did not necessarily indicate that other reagents from the same source were of equally high quality. All commercial anti-sera should be evaluated prior to use in the laboratory.
