ABSTRACT

C3H/He mice (a high mammary tumor strain) have mammary growth before mating and lactational performance superior to those for C57BL/6 mice (a low mammary tumor strain). Mammary growth and placental mammotropin in these two strains of mice were compared on Days 7, 14, and 19 of pregnancy. C3H/He mice were superior to C57BL/6 mice in mammary growth during pregnancy not only qualitatively but also quantitatively. On the other hand, placental mammotropic activities were not different between strains on Days 14 and 19 of pregnancy. These results suggest that other factors are more important than amounts of mammotropins acting on the gland as the cause of superiority of C3H/He mice to C57BL/6 mice in mammary growth during pregnancy.
