National Policies and Their Effect on the Dairy Industry1

Ed Jones, Congressman

ABSTRACT

I intend to look at the present situation, what appears to be ahead the next several years and to ask a few questions. Supernatural powers are not needed to predict what is in front and to present pertinent questions.

The lowest milk production since 1952 was 116.2 billion pounds in 1969. A corresponding decline in farmers' sales of milk and cream occurred. But producers' cash receipts from milk sold to the processors were $217,000,000 more in 1969 than 1968. Income in 1969 was up about $1,134,000,000 over 1965. The increase was 23% in 4 years. Farm milk returns from processors and distributors have increased every year since 1962.

Despite slightly higher consumer prices in 1969, milk was the greatest bargain ever in terms of real cost. The hourly earnings of an average production worker would buy more than 11 quarts in 1969 and 6 quarts 20 years ago.

In 1969 fluid milk and cream took 45.3% of the total milk supply, about the same as in 1968.
