Intermediary Aspects and Tissue Interactions of Ruminant Fat Metabolism1

R. L. Baldwin and N. E. Smith

Department of Animal Science, University of California, Davis 95616

ABSTRACT

An attempt to integrate and evaluate a wide range of data relating to mechanistic and quantitative aspects of ruminant fat metabolism was made with the objectives of representing tissue metabolism in terms quantitatively consistent with amounts of nutrients available and overall energetic restrictions, analysis of patterns of nutrient utilization relating to ruminant fat metabolism, consideration of mechanisms regulating ruminant fat metabolism, and identification of aspects of ruminant fat metabolism requiring further study. In achieving the desired integrations of data, a number of speculative commitments were essential. However, evaluation of ruminant fat metabolism achieved provides a basis for increased perspective.
