John Albert Nelson was born on a farm near Dubuque, Iowa, November 2, 1890. He died at the Bozeman, Montana, Deaconess Hospital, February 18, 1971, at age 80 years, 3 months, 16 days.
Mr. Nelson received his elementary education in a one-room country school and high school education at Epworth Seminary, Epworth, Iowa. In 1917, he entered Iowa State University, but his education was interrupted by World War I. He served as a cook in the 132nd Infantry and saw active service with the AEF in France. Following military service he resumed studies in dairy industries at IOWA State, graduating with honors, 1922. At once, he matriculated in the graduate school were he pursued studies in dairy bacteriology leading to M.S. degree 1n 1923.
Meanwhile, 1922, he embraced the opportunity to teach and do research as an instructor in dairy manufacturing at Montana State University, Bozeman. This was to be his home and life work for nearly half century.
