Dr. W. E. Petersen was born in Pine City, Minnesota, February 3, 1892 and died March 13, 1971. He grew up on a dairy farm near Pine City and after high school worked at the West Rock Creamery in his home community before coming to the University of Minnesota. He obtained the B.S., M.S. and Ph.D. degrees at the University in 1916, 1917, and 1928.
He paid his way through college by working in the dairy barn and at a nearby railway freight depot. In 1917 he became a dairy extension specialist at Kansas State College, Manhattan. After three years in that position he returned to Minnesota as field secretary for the Minnesota Holstein-Friesian Association. In 1921 he accepted a position in the department of dairy husbandry, University of Minnesota and remained there until mandatory retirement in 1960.
He was prominent as a teacher and during his career taught courses in milk production, farm dairying, and dairy cattle judging to students in the two-year curriculum in the School of Agriculture.
