ABSTRACT

The Gamma Sigma Delta Chapter at the University of Tennessee, Knoxville, recently honored Dr. E. W. Swanson by presenting him with the Merit Award for Research.

Dr. Swanson was recognized for many significant investigations in dairy cattle physiology and nutrition. Among these were pioneer work in the development of efficient methods for artificial breeding of cattle; economical methods for rearing heifers to give optimum milking ability; utilization of different kinds of feed by very young calves; metabolism of thyroxine and utilization of iodine by lactating cows; and investigations of how dry periods increase a cow's lactating ability. In many of his research trials, Dr. Swanson utilized identical twin heifers to increase the accuracy of results.

In addition to his active research career, Dr. Swanson has organized and taught five advanced courses in dairy cattle physiology and has counseled a large number of graduate students at The University of Tennessee.
