A Report: Committee on Classification of Particle Size in Feedstuffs

ABSTRACT

A procedure entitled, Proposed Method for Determining and Expressing Fineness of Feed Materials by Sieving has been given careful consideration and approval by the Board of Directors of the American Dairy Science Association. Publication of the procedure in the Journal Of Dairy Science was approved at the annual meeting of the Board of Directors, June, 1969. An ad hoc intersociety committee has been formed to encourage approval of this procedure among related societies.

The proposed procedure is limited in use to feed particles of spherical and cubical shape, such as concentrates. Hopefully, additional methods will be developed to classify elongated particles such as flaked grains and ground roughages.—W. L. Ensor, H. H. Olson, and V. F. Colenbrander, Chairman.

The purpose of this standard is to define a test procedure to determine the fineness of feed ingredients and a method of expressing the particle size of the material.

This standard shall be used to determine the fineness of feed ingredients where the reduction process yields particles essentially spherical or cubical.
